The Money Cult

I was watching the documentary on Netflix Wild Wild Country about the Rajneeshi cult and I remember the fear from my father about how a cult could take over everything. My father, is long gone from the earth, but I imagined what I would say to him now.

Whatever you think about cults, that’s your business. I’m not here to debate the ethos, except to say this, and this is what I would have said to my dad; We are all in a cult.

When you look objectively at our society, it can be said that it is a cult of sorts. We have been given our beliefs from our governments, parents, peers, that we must earn money, contribute to society, buy a house, a car through borrowed funds, be in debt to the banks for the rest of our lives and there is no way around it.

There is though but only the sub-cult has seen this and they are feared and misunderstood by the main cult who are indoctrinated into the debt cult.

There are other cults within the main cult, those of excessive money and lifestyle who squander it in one cult’s view, but in their view, it is there to be squandered.

I watched the movie Margin Call quite a few times, and there is line in there about money being nothing more than a construct so we don’t kill each other for food. This is true. But it has been given many connotations from the cult and sub-cults about its power, its privilege, and its ability to run the world and touch every life.

So within this cult and sub-cults it is extremely difficult to hear your own voice. There is great doubt. You cannot be right if everyone, even the sub-cults, don’t get you. You must be a freak.

You are not and I am not.

It is imperative at this time in history and at this time in our lives, (over 50’s but not strictly just to this age group, this is just where I am) to take a step break from the treadmill, look around yourself, look at the trends emerging and winning, and then look at the world, remember your history and get ready.

There are many sub-cults and sub-cultures in our society. Sub-cultures is the polite term given to groups that are more or less acceptable to the planet, but in terms of thinking, can be considered a cult nonetheless.

It is scary when a cult comes to town – no doubt – but it is any different than the white landing on indigenous occupied lands? Technically I don’t think so and this the loophole they were able to manipulate, if you consider it in those terms.

In all of this, above the strong need to ‘belong’ to one group or another, we first must “to thine own self be true”. What is it that you want? Are you happy to live destitute in your twilight years? If not you need to get a plan now, and one that does not solely rely on investment property, because the way I see it, you may be struggling to have those tenanted in 10-20 years. Shelter will always be a thing, the notion of ‘home’ is different for everyone and what we think to be the ideal of ‘home’ and the way of life we enjoyed, may not in 10-20 years be what others think.

Cash is king in my view. Cash and index funds. So that’s where I’m headed with a clear understanding that none of it is really for me. It is all for my children.
